If you have ever had your Four Pillars read, you may have heard something like this. "You have no Wealth star, so you will marry late." "Without a Wealth star, you won't be lucky with a wife."
The Wealth star (財星) is the name for the Direct Wealth (正財) and the Indirect Wealth (偏財) together. In a man's chart it is usually read as both money and a wife. That is where "no Wealth star = neither money nor a wife will come easily" comes from.
Let us look at why this reading arose, and why taking it at face value today is likely to mislead.
What is the Wealth star?
The Wealth star is the force you control: what you hold in your hand and handle. If the Officer star in Lesson 3 was "the power that keeps you in check," the Wealth star is the reverse: "what you keep in check."
Property, income, the resources you manage, and the work and people you are responsible for all belong here. Direct Wealth is closer to a steady share that keeps coming in; Indirect Wealth is closer to a share that moves in large amounts.
Why was the Wealth star once read as the wife?
The old manuals saw the Wealth star in a man's chart as his wife. The original note (原注) of the Di Tian Sui (滴天髓) says so too:
大率依財看妻. (Di Tian Sui, original note to the chapter on husband and wife)
As a rule, one looks at the wife through the Wealth star.
The reason is the same as in Lesson 3. For a man of that era, "what I govern and am responsible for" meant property and a wife.
In the old household, the wife was regarded as someone her husband governed. It was also the wife who ran the household and the storeroom. When a wife came in, a dowry came with her and the household gained another pair of hands. Property and the wife sat in the same place.
Marriage itself also cost money. You needed the means for the wedding and a household to feed and clothe a bride before you could marry. It was common for a poor man never to marry.
So the reading "no Wealth star = no property = hard to marry" made a kind of sense for life in that era. The original note set down this very idea:
身旺無財者, 必非夫婦全美者也. (Di Tian Sui, original note to the chapter on husband and wife)
One whose self is strong but who has no Wealth star will not have a marriage that is whole and fine.
What has changed: the Wealth star now has many places to go
The structure of having a Wealth star is the same today. It means a life with much to hold in your hand and handle. What has changed is where that power shows.
·
A life of actually marrying and building a household: sometimes the old reading does show up as it was.
·
Earning steadily: salary and fixed income, where Direct Wealth shows
·
Moving money in large amounts: business, investment, sales, where Indirect Wealth shows
·
Looking after other people's money and resources: finance, purchasing, budgets, operations, where the organisation owns it but you manage it
·
The people you are responsible for: team members, clients, family, the relationships you look after
Today a wife is not someone her husband governs. She is a partner who earns with him and decides with him. Marriage, too, no longer depends on one person's wealth alone. The reason for the Wealth star and the wife to sit in the same place has gone.
The Wealth star matters more today, but as structure, not as "how much"
Paradoxically, the Wealth star matters more now than it did in the past. In the old days, land and houses passed down through the generations, and the way people made a living did not change much. Today, finding a home, paying living costs and raising children all run on money. Before a wedding, the first thing people talk through is usually money.
The way society looks at money has changed as well. The old society ranked people as scholars, farmers, artisans and merchants, in that order. Chasing profit was looked down on, and the highest place was official rank. In Four Pillars too, the Wealth star was read as the place that gives birth to the Officer star (Wealth generating Officer). Wealth was not an end in itself but the groundwork for rising to office.
With capitalism, the order was turned upside down. Today money is the measure of status. Salary says more than a job title, and assets say more than an office, about where a person stands. The Wealth star that once sat below the Officer star now stands beside it, or even above it.
The bigger change is the shape of the family. In the past, several generations lived under one roof or in one village. When a child was born, the grandmother and aunts raised it together; when the household struggled, the clan and relatives helped. What held the family together was the power that cares for and supports you (the Resource star) and the order of the household head and family rules (the Officer star).
Today the family is nuclear. A couple moves out and lives on its own, and relatives do not help one another the way they used to. Childcare and care for parents are now paid for. The Wealth star is doing the work that the Resource and Officer stars once did.
So today's Wealth star has grown beyond meaning a wife. It has become the force that holds a family together. We live in an age when, if the money wavers, the family wavers with it.
This change reaches women's charts as well. Women in the past had almost no way to earn and manage wealth themselves. At most, the Wealth star in a woman's chart was read as running the household. Now dual incomes are normal. Wives earn too, buy homes together and save together to raise children. The Wealth star is no longer a story about men only; it is a story about both people who build a home together.
In fact the old books already rated the Wealth star highly in women's charts. Here is Ren Tieqiao's commentary, which we met in Lesson 3:
財乃天之恩星, 女命身旺無官, 財星得令得局者, 上格也. (Di Tian Sui, Ren Tieqiao's commentary)
Wealth is the star of Heaven's grace. In a woman's chart, if the self is strong and there is no Officer star, but the Wealth star has its season and its formation, it is a fine chart.
Even with no husband star (Officer), a chart with a well-placed Wealth star is a good one. Already in that era, the book held that a woman's life could be read through the Wealth star, not only through a husband.
But having more money no longer means having more wives, as it once did. The old book wrote:
至於財旺身強者, 必富貴而多妻妾. (Di Tian Sui, original note to the chapter on husband and wife)
One whose Wealth is flourishing and whose self is strong will surely be rich and honoured, with many wives and concubines.
In an age when a man could keep concubines, more property meant more wives under his roof. The "amount" of the Wealth star was the "number" of wives. Today, however rich a man is, he has one wife. Many Wealth stars do not add marriages, and few do not take marriage away.
So what matters now is not how many Wealth stars you have but the structure in which they sit.
·
Many Wealth stars but little strength to carry them (Wealth many, self weak): money passes before your eyes but does not become yours. The old phrase is "a poor man in a rich house" (富屋貧人). In married life, too, you tend to be dragged around by money problems.
·
Few Wealth stars but a clear way to use them: you can build a solid household even with modest resources.
·
The Wealth star is the force that favours you (your Favourable God, 喜神): money and relationships tend to flow in a way that keeps each other alive.
Having no Wealth star works the same way. It may be a life lived through other channels than holding and moving money: the power to create (the Output stars) or the power to learn and build up (the Resource star). That does not mean you cannot marry. But we live in an age when the Wealth star has become the force that holds a family together. Someone with no Wealth star may want to build a family yet tends to lack the management skills to handle money and a household.
People with no Wealth star often show signs like these:
·
They tend to lack breathing room. Feeling that they hold little, they become hurried.
·
They tend to cling to what is in front of them rather than the bigger picture. They grab this month and this job instead of plans for years ahead.
·
Their capable, well-organised side shows less. You rarely see them handling money and a household with ease.
So even if they are sincere inside, they have a hard time looking dependable from the outside. Since dependability is the first thing a future partner looks for, this becomes the biggest task for someone with no Wealth star.
That is why "no Wealth star, so you can't marry" is not the right way to take it. It is better read as a time to look again at your own management skills. The ways to make up for it are clear.
·
Write long-term plans down: putting a home, savings and life a few years ahead into numbers holds back a mind that leans toward the short term.
·
Make the flow of money visible: keep track of income and spending and share it openly with the person you will live with, and your capable side will show.
·
Keep small promises first: dependability shows through small promises piling up more than through big decisions.
·
Share the handling of money: rather than holding all of it alone, dividing roles with someone who is good at it is also a way of building structure.
With management skills like these, even a chart with no Wealth star can become a solid household.
In the past, the amount of the Wealth star decided the number of wives. Today, the structure of the Wealth star shapes how stable a marriage is. The Wealth star has not become less important; the question has moved from "how much" to "how."
The old books did not nail the Wealth star to the wife either
Before the original note, the main text of the Di Tian Sui chapter on husband and wife says this:
夫妻因緣宿世來, 喜神有意傍天財. (Di Tian Sui, chapter on husband and wife)
The bond of husband and wife comes from former lives; the Favourable God, with intent, stands beside the Wealth star.
What it puts at the centre of the marriage bond is not the Wealth star but the Favourable God (喜神), the force that is welcome to you. The Wealth star only stands beside it. The original note also said "as a rule" (大率), not "always." And it adds right away:
然看財神, 又須活法. (Di Tian Sui, original note to the chapter on husband and wife)
Yet even in looking at the Wealth star, one must read it flexibly.
Ren Tieqiao's words, which we saw in Lesson 3, point the same way. He said the husband star in a woman's chart is really her Useful God (用神), and warned against taking only the Officer star as the husband. Carry the same principle over to a man's chart, and a good wife, too, is not the Wealth star but "the person who supplies what I need."
Where will my Wealth star be used? A simple guide
Don't look at the Wealth star alone. Look at what sits beside it in your chart as well. This is exactly the "structure" we talked about above.
·
If the Output stars are clear (Output generating Wealth, 食傷生財): a structure of making and selling. What you make, such as skills, content or products, becomes money.
·
If the Companion stars are clear (Companions sharing Wealth, 比劫分財): a structure that grows when you earn together. As with joint ventures or team results, the whole grows the more the shares are divided. It is wise, though, to make contracts and stakes clear from the start.
·
If the Officer star is clear (Wealth generating Officer, 財生官): a structure in which money leads to position. These are places where results turn straight into rank and trust.
·
If there are many Wealth stars but the Day Master is weak (Wealth many, self weak, 財多身弱): you are strong in places where you look after large resources rather than own them. Taking on management in finance, purchasing or operations, and sharing the handling of money rather than holding it alone, is more stable.

How Mingyeong reads it
Whether the Wealth star shows as income, as work managing resources or as relationships of care cannot be settled by the characters of a chart alone. See which paths historical figures with a similar temperament chose in their own era, and compare them with the paths open to you now.
Mingyeong’s readings are based on traditional interpretation and historical records. They are for reflection and do not predict or guarantee the future.
